Pranayama is made up of two words. The first one is ‘Prana’ which means life itself and the other one is ‘Ayama’ meaning self control or gradual development. So, Pranayam is the development of life or life force. We can even regard it as a control over the various forces of life which are often badly affecting the physical and social well being of a person. Pranayam exercises are breathing exercises which promote the influence of self will and self control. Most of the yoga postures or asanas are helpful in healing the problematic situation of life which creates various difficulties in the survival of the person.
