Knee Replacement Exercises
Recovery period after a total knee replacement surgery is considered to be the most important stage of the knee replacement surgery. Patient can in no case ignore the rehabilitation period and the techniques of rehabilitation after the surgery. Physiotherapist plays an important role in the rehabilitation period. Physiotherapist with the help of the surgeon plans a comprehensive exercising regime for the patient. These knee replacement exercises are planned for the patient so as to return to normal life in a shorter period of time. Following are the exercises which could be advised by the physiotherapist so as to recover completely.

Standing knee bends
This is the advanced type of knee replacement exercises which is suggested when the surgeon and the physical therapist consider that the patient has gained sufficient strength. In this type of exercise, patient lifts the thigh and bends the knee. Patient can take the help of a walker. This exercise should be repeated until patients feels fatigued.
Exercycling
Exercycling is also an advanced type knee replacement exercise. This exercise enhances the knee strength and thigh mobility. The seat height and the place of the exercycling machine should be adjusted so that it does not stress the knee. This exercise is however advised six to seven weeks after the surgery.
Assisted knee bends
This exercise is performed while lying on the back. A folded towel is placed over the ankle and the patient tries to apply gentle pressure in order to bend the knee. This exercise could be performed for five to ten minutes umless the patient feels fatigued.
Exercises with resistance
Exercises after applying weight on the knee and performing all other exercises are advised in the advanced stages of the recovery period. These exercises with resistance are primarily to increase the knee strength. Initially patient can use one or two pounds weight and gradually increase it.
Quadriceps
This is one of the primary knee replacement exercises. Performed in the initial stages of eh recovery period, the patient tightens the thigh muscle in this exercise and then tries to straighten the knee. The exercise is repeated for eight to ten times.
Bed supported knee bends
This exercise is performed while lying on the bed. The knee is bent by sliding the foot as much as possible. The patient then tries to hold the bent knee for a few seconds and then straightens the knee bent. Bed supported knee bends is one of the primary knee replacement exercises.
Sitting supported knee bends
This exercise is performed while sitting on a chair. With the support of the thigh muscle one foot is placed is behind the heel of the operated knee. The knee is then bent by the patient and this exercise is performed for five to ten seconds continuously. Sitting supported knee bends is one of the best primary knee replacement exercises which allows the patient to regain strength during the recovery period.
