Fundamentals of Root Canal Therapy

  • Due to decay, cracks or repeated dental procedures nerves of tooth get damaged and pulp inside the root canal gets inflamed, infected and causes pain.
  • There are two ways to get relief from pain-root canal therapy or tooth removal.
  • Dentists advise removing tooth as a last resort.
  • Root Canal Treatment should be performed quickly to avoid bacteria from traveling down the canal to the root and into jaw bone.

Non-Surgical Root Canal Treatment (NSRCT) This is the procedure directed towards the saving an endodontically failing tooth. An access opening through crown is created to give the dentist non- surgical access into the root canal spaces through biting surface of the tooth.

Surgical Root Canal Therapy (SRCT) Surgical root canal treatment is a procedure in which a small flap of tissue is elevated, adjacent to the involved tooth to gain access and to treat root canal disease. Surgical RCT often times result in good, long- term prognosis for the tooth, if the cause of pathology is effectively removed.

Is Root canal treated tooth, a dead tooth RCT does not kill a tooth. The tooth continues to receive its blood supply and nourishment from the surrounding tissues and supporting bone.

Restoration Of a Root Canal Treated tooth After RCT it is mandatory to put a crown over the treated tooth. Root canal treated tooth present specific restorative problems due to insufficient healthy tooth structure, remaining to retain its final restoration.

Alternative to RCT The only alternative to RCT is the removal (extraction) of problematic tooth. It is wise to consider all implications of loosing tooth before removing it.
