Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in prevention and correction of dental and facial irregularities. In simple terms an orthodontist’s job is to properly position the tooth and if necessary the jaw bones so as to achieve maximum aesthetic efficiency. Today children and adults both are choosing to have orthodontic treatment since age is no longer a factor that governs the feasibility of the treatment. It is easier to shift alignment of teeth during growth phase of jaw. Results of orthodontic treatment are dramatic- beautiful smile, improved dental health and good quality of life for many people of all ages. Orthodontists needs professional skill in the design, application and control of corrective appliances such as braces and retainers, so that to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and to achieve facial balance.

How does Orthodontic Treatment work Teeth are slowly moved and shifted into proper positions by applying pressure in certain directions. Braces are placed on teeth to move them in right direction. This takes place slowly and carefully over an extended period of time and can take months to years.

Types of Orthodontic Treatment

  • Invisible braces (Invisalign braces) - These types of braces are placed on the front of teeth and are barely visible from over a meter away. There are four options of invisible braces-
    1. Sapphire braces
    2. Ceramic braces
    3. Lingual braces
    4. Invisalign braces
  • Metal braces Conventional metal braces are now smaller, more efficient and comfortable following many advances in orthodontic material such as metal wire and brackets

Retention after Orthodontic Treatment After completion of the active part of orthodontic treatment, the braces are removed and retaining appliances (retainers) are fitted to hold the teeth steady their new positions. A retainer is a custom made removable appliance that helps teeth to maintain their new position after braces have been removed. Retainers play important role in orthodontic treatment for if they are not worn according to the instructions, the teeth may move back towards their original position
