Nose Surgery
Nose surgery, also termed as rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the facial composition by reshaping the nose. Nose reshaping or often called as nose job is done for various reasons such as increasing or reducing the size of the nose, changing the nasal tip or the bridge, removing any unsightly humps or bumps and making the nose straighter or narrower.
Suitable Candidates for Nose Surgery –
If you have developed a deformity in size and shape of your nose naturally or by accident, then you are a perfect candidate for nose surgery. Nose may be excessively flared at nostrils, crooked at the end or have bumps in middle. These irregularities can be diminished with nose surgery. However a surgeon should take into account the age of patient. Usually it is preferred for patients to be at least 14-15 year old, so that their nose size and shape has stabilized. Your medical history will also factor in to make you a suitable candidate for a nose job.
Pre-Consultation for Nose Surgery –
Surgeons will enquire about your reason for undergoing surgery and your expectations from it, medical history of previous surgeries and current medication details. It is very important that a surgeon understands how the client wants to look like after the surgery. The surgeon would then study your graphical details of the nose and would present you the 3D model of what he would be able to accomplish. It is advisable to clearly discuss, if the analysis is not pleasing. He would also brief you on risks and recovery precautions of nose surgery. It is advised to not eat before surgery since it may produce nauseating feeling after surgery. Also it is recommended to clean your face with anti-bacterial wash, to prevent infection.
Nose Surgery Procedure –
Though the procedure entirely depends on the type of work you want to have done on your nose, the basic rhinoplasty technique is as follows:
Step1: Anesthesia is administered for patient’s comfort. Usually general anesthesia is given.
Step2: Incisions are made in two fashions – open
or closed incisions. Closed Incision involves making a series of small incisions
inside the nostrils, hidden inside the nose.
Open Incision, however, makes incision across the columella, the narrow strip
of tissues that separates the nostrils, outside the
nose.
Step3: With the use of cartilage grafted from other parts of body, usually from the partition in the middle of the nose, called septum, nasal shape can be reduced or augmented. Sometimes cartilage may also be taken from ears or ribs.
Step4:Correction of deviated septum improves breathing. This is done by reducing and straightening the projections inside the nose.
Step5:Incisions are closed, once the desired shape is acquired through sculpting the structure of nose.
Risks of Nose Surgery –
Specific risks for rhinoplasty are rare and heal over the time, to let you enjoy the desired results in most cases. Some of the complication that arise after the nose surgery operation are pain, swelling around eyes and nose, sutures may continue to re-appear on nose, skin discoloration and pigmentation around eyes forming dark circles. In rare cases, nasal passage may be obstructed, nose asymmetry and nasal septal perforation.
Nose surgery has tremendous effect on face structure and is right away noticeable. It not only improves facial harmony but also helps in rectifying impaired breathing caused due to abnormal shape and size of the nose.
