Vaginoplasty

A woman places a lot of importance on the feel of her pubic region. The vaginal or the pubic region is closely related to her confidence and self esteem. According to research discomfort in a woman’s vaginal area has an affect on her psychological state.

Vaginoplasty is categorised as a cosmetic surgery which functions to improve the look and the feel of the pubic region. Vaginoplasty includes tightening and muscle re-building. The main causes which result in the loosening of vaginal muscles or tearing of vaginal muscles are- aging, birth giving and genetic factors.

About Vaginoplasty surgery-

1. Vaginoplasty is a medical procedure which works to tighten the vaginal canal. The vaginal canal usually becomes larger with changes which are associated with aging.
2. Vaginoplasty can also be used in cases such as a poorly healed episiotomy which is a cut which is made at childbirth. The vaginal opening is tightened with the help of vaginoplasty which also increases sexual pleasure.
3. The patient is usually given a local anaesthetic which is combined with sedation. Vaginoplasty is usually carried out with traditional surgical methods but can sometimes involve the use of lasers.
4. The main aim of vaginoplasty is to remove excess vaginal skin to narrow down the diameter of the vagina which results in a much smaller and tighter opening which is also called intriotus. With this surgery the vaginal vault is also made tighter. Vaginoplasty takes around 60 to 90 minutes for completion.

Before vaginoplasty surgery-

The most suited time to perform this surgery is immediately after menstruation. By doing the surgery right after menstruation the tissues would have healed before the next cycle of menstruation begins. There are no special precautions required before undergoing the surgery.

After vaginoplasty surgery-

After the surgery is complete, an adhesive strip would be applied to the vulva. A vaginal stent would be applied, which would aid the vagina to retain its shape and also help in the healing process. The stent is made of a waterproof external surface which is flexible and soft.

The amount of pain with surgery is quite low. The stitches would not be needed to be removed, since an absorbable surgical thread is put to use. Bruises tend to appear near the vagina, bruises later would no longer be visible after a few days.

Precautionary measures required for vaginoplasty are-

One should refrain from smoking. Smoking reduces the body’s oxygenation and less of oxygen would result in complications after the surgery. Low levels of oxygen can result in thicker and more visible scars, slower healing of wounds and skin necrosis. It would be advisable that if the patient is a smoker not to smoke few weeks prior to the surgery. Rest would be required for around 24 to 48 hours but the patient is allowed to walk around.
