Ear Surgery

One of the most common misconceptions about ear is that its primary function for human body is hearing. Actually, the primary function of the ear is to maintain balance of the human body. Not only this, it contributes a lot to our appearance as well, making it an important feature of our personality. Otoplasty, more commonly known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a surgical procedure which is designed to reduce the size of large ears or pin back ears that protrude too much from the head. Due to this, it is commonly referred to as "ear pinning”.

Pre surgery Information

The patients’ entire medical history is evaluated first and then it is made sure that he is a suitable candidate for ear surgery. It is made sure that there are no complications involved. They are advised to stop smoking and not to take medications that contain aspirin.

The ears are examined, evaluated and photographed and the angle between the ear and the head is also calculated. It should be kept in mind that the two ears can never be identical and symmetrical. There is bound to be some difference in their shape. To keep an account of the changes that the surgery has brought about, digital photographs of the marked areas are taken.

The Procedure

This surgery could be performed under local or general anesthesia and there is no need to get admitted. An incision is made in the crease situated on the back of the ear and the cartilage is exposed. The surgery proceeds by reducing the angle between the ear and the head. To retain the ear in the new position, permanent stitches are done. To close the incision, stitches are used under the skin and then a fluffy cotton dressing is applied. Finally, a bandage is placed on the ear to help in the healing process.

Post-surgery Information

The patients are told not to sleep on the sides for about 3 weeks to avoid putting any stress or strain on the ears. For initial days after the surgery, the bandage should be retained after which a head band will have to be worn for about 4 weeks. It is expected that there could be pain and bruising near the ear but analgesics and other medications are used to control it. Only 2-3 days are needed to retain normal activity and it should be remembered that the ear should not be pulled or stretched till complete healing has taken place.

Aftercare

Just like any other surgery, ear surgery also has complications and usually they are the uncommon ones, like infection or blood clots. However, most people are satisfied with the results and an occurrence of complications is quite rare. However, contact your doctor immediately if you develop fever or there is excessive swelling or bleeding.
