Conization of Cervix
Conization of cervix is performed to diagnose and treat abnormalities of the cervix. This operation is performed if a pap smear shows a lesion that can be a cancerous or precancerous. It is performed to remove abnormal, cancerous or precancerous cells from the cervix or from the canal of cervix. Tests such as – ECG, Chest X- ray, Urinalysis, Blood tests, biopsy cervix, USG, colposcopy and schiller test can be performed for the Conization of cervix. A biopsy test is performed to look for cancer or other abnormalities on the cervix. In this test, tissues or cells are removed form the body to examine under a microscope.

Procedure of Conization of cervix:
The patient should not drink or eat anything eight hours before the operation. Before the operation, doctor gives general anesthesia to the patient. Doctor uses a scalpel or laser beam to remove a cone-shaped piece of the cervix which contains abnormal cells. Heat or freezing will be used to stop bleeding. After removing the tissue, the doctor will examine the signs of cancer under a microscope. If the doctor finds cancer then he will perform surgery to remove the cervix or uterus. If the abnormal cells are precancerous then the doctor might use laser to destroy them.
There are some conditions in which you should immediately consult your doctor. Whenever you start to bleed again or when you have excessive pain in the lower abdomen, consult your doctor. One should avoid heavy lifting, tampons, douching, and sexual intercourse at least for 4 weeks after the operation.

Side effects of Conization of cervix:
The side effects of Conization of cervix are weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, loss of vaginal sensation and painful urination. Some women can experience minor bleeding after the treatment. If the cervix bleeds several days after the operation you might require surgery. The patient can require more surgery and might develop scarring or narrowing of the cervical canal.
